PC or TV

(It is still personal computer, not family computer.)

Meaning of life and sustainable living

Life can be described as a container. Life can be long or short, just like container can be large or small. However, a large container doesn’t means it is a beautiful one, where small container can be full of wonderful and attractive contents.

Life is limited. We need to decide what things are worth and meaningful for us to put them into our own container. Some values, such as love and friendship, are important and some people may even regard them as basic things to constitute a happy life. I think everyone needs friends, lover(s), and family to share, care and rely. Being the only one in the world will not be meaningful and happy.

There are thousands upon thousands people in this world. I do believe living a meaningful life is a desire of most of us. So, one thing we need to keep in mind is that how we can achieve our own meaningful life without affecting others doing the same thing, or at least minimizes our harmful effects on others and the earth that we all are living. This is one of the core ideas of sustainable life.

I worked and lived in an organic firm in Australia during my last summer break. The life there follows the concept of permaculture. We got the vegetables and fruits from the fields that we plowed using the organic method and the eggs from the chicken that was fed with vegetables and kitchen waste. Sometimes, if we were lucky enough, fishes that we fished from the sea. Of course we did need to buy some more extra foods from the supermarket. However, the first rule of choosing a brand was that the foods were produced based on organic method. Also, we won’t make any rubbish out of these packaged foods. All the paper bags, plastic bags and metal cans were well classified into different boxes and sent to recycle centre. This experience impressed me a lot. It told me that we can live in a green way that the harm to the environment is reduced to a very low level. Can highly populated city, like Hong Kong apply this kind of living for every one? The answer obviously is no. However, I believe we can apply the concept and try our best to moving forward to achieve a sustainable life.

Life can be so simple. We should not occupied wholly by work and forget the meaning of life that we are chasing for. For those year 3 students like me, we are going to graduate soon. Many of us even started to look for a job. The first thing we concern always is the salary and career prospect. However, work is only a mean for us to achieve our own meaningful way of living. How many of us can pause for a moment and think about what we are looking for in our limited life? Beside salary, what we are looking for from the job?

Parent to parent﹕

Black and White

A page which is filled with black and white. Why would someone make it like that? The black background and white words make me feel depressed suddenly. I don't know why.

The words, the background and the picture, all make me feel that your mind is complicated and full of depression. It seems you are lost and looking for an exit.

What are you thinking? What am I thinking?

You are not alone

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away?
Something whispers in my ear and says

You are not alone
I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

You are not alone
I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart

- by Michael Jackson -

I don't know you are alone or not. Maybe you even don't know I am talking to you. But I really want to deliever this song to you. Let you know I am always be here.

'You've got to find what you love'

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Lost

Nationalism

The boardening course Culture, Values and Meaning of Life talks about different topics every week. It is an assignment for us to write down some feeling and comments after each lecture. Just want to share some of my views here (and keep my blog alive at the same time-__-"). Please tell me if I make any grammartical or logical errors (I have poor English and writing skill). I will give you a piece of candy as reward. :)

Human being trends to inhabit in group and live with those people who have similar characteristics. It is because it is easier for us to communicate and interact with those who have same language, cultural, historical background, etc. As a result, a group of people who recognize a similarity among themselves and have a sense of cohesiveness can be regarded as a nation.

Each nation wants to govern its own territory. State can be formed to govern its own territory and government is the agent of the citizen to control and run the state affairs.

Nationalism is a people’s psychological attachment to a particular nation. It is a people’s identification with a nation, and their subjective belief that they have more in common with each other than they have with other people. Members of a nation need to offer their primary loyalty to the nation and its state.

In Chinese philosophy, nation is an extension of family. It is a virtue to offer our love to our family, nation, state and loyal to the emperor. Hong Kong people have been criticized to be lack of nationalism. One of the reasons is that we had long been under the control of a state, Britain, which is not our home state. Before 1997, we therefore can only claim we are Chinese. However, as Hong Kong at that time was not part of China, we lacked the opportunity to develop our sense of state, not even to say have a strong sense of nationalism.

Recent years, our government is trying to foster our sense of nationhood and values of nation through different means. I am not in any position to support or oppose these activities. However, I want to point out the objectives that our loyalty should offer to. The political system in China enable Communist Party enjoys the monopoly political power in China. It is sometimes reported in the newspaper that some officials from mainland say that Hong Kong people should support their nation, state and even the party. Nationalism provides us a sense of cohesiveness to protect and fight for the interest of our own nation and state. However, government is only our agent and political party is just a group that represents a particular political stand point of some of the citizens in our state. We can love, support and offer our loyalty to our nation and state, but not necessarily our government and any political party. We can criticize and even change our government through election if it is not running well. Blindly following the government’s directions is not a healthy form of nationalism as it can be easily utilized by some ambitious politicians to turn it into extreme nationalism which can bring disaster to the nation and even to the world. Nazi Germany is an obvious example.
